Chief Engineer

Verus Research is searching for a Chief Engineer to be a key member of the engineering leadership team within our Space and Autonomy portfolio. The Chief Engineer will act as a technical authority and will work closely with functional engineering teams and program managers to meet our customers’ needs within the Department of Defense (DoD).

The Chief Engineer will: support the development of solutions, provide input to technical cost proposals, drive affordability, and ensure the technical integrity of delivered products with rigor through design, testing, and technical issue resolution; serve as a technical authority for multiple projects and provide technical leadership for developing roadmaps, engineering standards, process, and tools by incorporating best practices and lessons learned across multiple projects; act as a hands-on leader, providing technical expertise and guidance across projects to ensure technical integrity and technical rigor of space satellite designs, analysis, testing, and investigations; help develop the technical direction of multiple projects and plan approaches to quickly reduce technical risk; lead Engineering and Failure Review Boards for multiple projects and provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the engineering teams; work as part of a larger team with a principal program manager, customers, external partners, vendors, scientists, developers, engineers, managers, technicians, and support personnel; and work closely with our senior staff in identifying and pursuing additional growth areas.

The ideal candidate for the Chief Engineer role will possess a strong mix of leadership traits, technical and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas and provide innovative solutions. Success in this demanding role will stem from:

• U.S. citizenship
• Active Top Secret SCI clearance
• Master’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)
• 10+ years’ systems engineering experience related to Department of Defense and major space systems/programs
• Professional engineering certification equivalent to DAWIA Level 3 Systems Engineering Certification, demonstration of continued education
• Demonstrated technical leadership of space projects during all stages of the project lifecycle, from concept formulation through design, development, integration, testing, and delivery; demonstrated ability to successfully multi-task across multiple simultaneous projects in different lifecycle stages
• Experience:
o Managing external collaborators, including vendors and subcontractors, in one or more of the following technical areas:
– Analog and digital electronics
– Communications, Optical or RF missions
– Payloads, digital data processing and edge networking
– Spacecraft mission operations with processes on failure investigation (root cause analysis, corrective action definition, failure review boards, etc.) supporting the technical evaluation of design and requirements verification in different phases of aerospace component and system development cycle and mission life cycle experience, including concept development, detail design, design reviews, manufacturing and AIT, operations, and anomaly investigations
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated experience in developing briefings for senior and executive level management and customers
• Ability to resolve and close technical issues and challenges with competing demands
• Subject matter expert in one or more Spacecraft and Design Engineering domains
• Familiarity with other engineering processes, disciplines, and subject matter authorities
