Mechanical Engineering Intern

Verus Research is searching for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the planning, documentation, and supervised build execution of critical subassemblies within a larger ultra-high vacuum assembly. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in precision mechanical hardware, formal engineering build documentation and best practices, and integration / build activities typical of complex engineering systems.

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will work alongside senior engineering and scientific staff to assemble, test, and modify critical subassemblies within a larger ultra-high vacuum assembly.

This posting is for work in Albuquerque, NM on site, and is intended to be a summer 2026 appointment only.

Verus Research is prepared to pay for round-trip travel to and from Albuquerque, as well as lodging expenses during your stay in Albuquerque for the summer. Transportation is needed through the duration of the internship but not provided by Verus Research.

The ideal candidate for the Mechanical Engineering Intern role will possess strong design, analytical, hands-on, and problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex ideas and provide innovative solutions.

Success in this demanding role will stem from:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Pursuing undergraduate degree or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (if undergraduate rising senior, preferred)
  • Experience with mechanical systems design and documentation, and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Experience with test equipment and basic metrology tools, calipers, micrometers, and gauges preferred
  • Experience with mechanical assembly and shop environments preferred
  • Willingness to perform hands-on work
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work well in a team
