Verus Research to Provide Quick Reaction Capabilities With EMITTERS Award

In response to a need for “quick reaction capabilities” to help counter the growing threat posed by opposing forces’ unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), Verus Research has been selected to enhance its existing Directed Energy System Placement Analysis (DESPA) capability.

DESPA is a counter-UAS weapon mission planning tool that depicts the engagement of high-power microwave (HPM) systems against UAS targets in a 3-dimensional scene, with user controls to add, locate, and orient any available HPM sources. DESPA provides immediate visual cues to indicate first-order estimates of weapon range to effect and collateral damage potential. It provides controls for moving the HPM sources so that users can see in real time how the HPM coverage may change based on the number and placement of HPM weapons. Further, it has an automated interface to Verus Research’s Joint RF Effectiveness Model (JREM) which allows users to perform more detailed propagation analysis and generate second-order collateral damage estimates.

The new $450,000, 1-year effort awarded under Verus Research’s existing Test & Evaluation Non-Kinetic (TEN-K) contract will tailor DEPSA for test and evaluation (T&E) purposes and is called ElectroMagnetic Interactive Tool for Test & Evaluation of Rf Systems or EMITTERS.  EMITTERS will include tailored capabilities to support T&E of counter-UAS systems and the testing of HPM weapons. Its expanded capabilities will include an interactive, 3-dimensional view of outdoor effects testing and pre-defined scenarios for HPM test sites. It will model dynamic engagements and support export of artifacts for test planning and safety assessments, including hazard zones, effectiveness, and collateral damage.

As HPM systems begin to make their way into the battlespace, it will be increasingly important to quickly assess how well these systems will perform and identify any hazards they may pose. These Verus Research tools will be key to ensuring safe and effective operation of these new weapon systems.

Verus Research Notches First Contract Award From DARPA

Verus Research received its first-ever contract award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) with the Waveform Agile RF Directed Energy (WARDEN) contract. Should all options be exercised, this $5 million, 48-month effort seeks to develop hardware, theory, and computational models to extend the range and effectiveness of high-power microwave (HPM) systems for back-door attacks.

The contract scope specifically addresses electromagnetic interactions with electronics contained within enclosures and the effects on system operation. Planned research will leverage recent test methodologies and modeling approaches and extend them to broader classes of target systems to create a physics-based computational framework for the prediction of HPM effects.

To meet DARPA’s requirements as well as address the key questions delineated above, Verus Research will leverage our over three decades experience in researching and modeling the fundamental physical factors which govern the nonlinear, back-door interaction of high-power radio frequency (RF) emissions with complicated electronic systems of interest. This concentrated, effects-based effort will help guide the development of new HPM systems by extending their range and effectiveness and providing new HPM employment approaches for the Department of Defense.

The program is planned to deliver on an integrated approach across multiple Verus Research domains by using machine learning techniques in conjunction with RF predictive effects to devise more effective HPM waveforms.

Verus Research Soars in 2021 Flying 40 Accolades

For the sixth consecutive year, Verus Research earned a prominent place on the list of New Mexico’s fastest growing technology companies.

The Flying 40 awards, which launched in 1998, celebrate the success of the homegrown firms included on the annual list, while also drawing the state’s attention to the critical role New Mexico’s technology sector plays in diversifying the local economy.  To be considered for inclusion, company growth is measured over five years, from 2016 through 2020.

This year, Verus Research earned a spot on two lists, placing #8 among the top 10 firms in total revenue. Additionally, Verus Research checked in at #4 on the list of top 10 revenue growth rates for businesses with more than $10M in revenue.

Dan Treibel is One of Albuquerque Business First’s 2021 40 Under Forty honorees

Verus Research is proud to announce Dan Treibel’s selection as an Albuquerque Business First “40 Under Forty” honoree.

Each year, ABF recognizes the best and brightest young professionals — under the age of 40 — in New Mexico as part of its 40 Under Forty Awards.

Along with others so recognized, Dan puts in the work both inside and outside of the office to not only provide for his family, but for our community.  As noted in the coverage for this announcement, “when (the honorees) are asked to go above and beyond, they take that request to new heights.”

Dan presently serves as Senior Director for Sensors & Instrumentation.  On October 1st, as previously released, he will become Verus Research’s Chief Operating Officer.

Inc. Magazine Reveals Annual List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies—the Inc. 5000

NEW YORK, August 17, 2021Inc. magazine today revealed that VERUS RESEARCH is No. 2,801 on its annual Inc. 5000 list, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The list represents a unique look at the most successful companies within the American economy’s most dynamic segment—its independent small businesses. Intuit, Zappos, Under Armour, Microsoft, Patagonia, and many other well-known names gained their first national exposure as honorees on the Inc. 5000.

Not only have the companies on the 2021 Inc. 5000 been very competitive within their markets, but this year’s list also proved especially resilient and flexible given 2020’s unprecedented challenges. Among the 5,000, the average median three-year growth rate soared to 543 percent, and median revenue reached $11.1 million. Together, those companies added more than 610,000 jobs over the past three years.

Verus Research is #26 on New Mexico’s Top Private Companies List for 2021

Verus Research is proud to be named as the 26th largest private company in New Mexico for 2021.

Each year, Albuquerque Business First honors the area’s top private companies via its New Mexico Top Private Companies list. The annual rankings are compiled via a survey that is sent to New Mexico businesses, which asks them to provide their revenue for the latest fiscal year. Respondents are then ranked based on revenue amounts.

In addition to the #26 ranking for 2021, Verus Research was highlighted as being the youngest company on the list, having been founded in 2014.

Verus Research Selected to Participate in $950 Million Nationwide Contract

Verus Research is one of 30 companies nationwide selected to participate in a $950,000,000 ceiling indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the maturation, demonstration and proliferation of capability across platforms and domains, leveraging open systems design, modern software and algorithm development in order to enable Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2).

“Hundreds of companies sought to garner this award and fewer than thirty were selected,” according to Verus Research Chief Technology Officer, Dr. J. Mark DelGrande.  Under this award, “we will support the Air Force’s desire to leverage commercial technologies, infrastructure, and data sharing best practices to deliver modernized operational capability to the Joint warfighter.”

Dr. DelGrande also noted Verus Research’s “increasing diversity across multiple technical domains, including sensors, electronic warfare, communications, directed energy, system assessment, and testing, was key to securing this win.”

This contract is part of a multiple award multi-level security effort to provide development and operation of systems as a unified force across all domains (air, land, sea, space, cyber, and the electromagnetic spectrum) in an open architecture family of systems that enables capabilities via multiple integrated platforms.

Verus Research Announces New Technical Director of Electronic Warfare

Verus Research announces the appointment of James Barlow as the company’s new technical director for electronic warfare.  Barlow will lead Verus Research’s efforts in electronic warfare and will aid in developing technologies that will utilize the electromagnetic spectrum or directed energy to sense a threat, attack an enemy, or protect against an assault.

“We are thrilled to welcome James to our award-winning team,” said Dan Treibel, senior director for sensors and instrumentation for Verus Research.  “He will provide the type of leadership that we are striving for at Verus Research as we continue to grow and expand our work in electronic warfare.  With his technical and military background, James is an extremely valuable asset and his leadership will help us deliver innovative and creative solutions for our clients utilizing electronic warfare to protect against and attack adversaries.”

Barlow joins Verus Research after working as a defense space systems engineer for MITRE corporation in the Space, Cyber, & Intel Solutions department.  He also worked as multi-discipline systems engineer in the MITRE’s Space and IO Innovations department and its Advanced ISR Solutions department.  Prior to MITRE Corporation, Barlow was the ISR domain expert at Battelle Memorial Institute and a principal intelligence analyst for CACI-NSR, Inc.

Barlow also has extensive experience in the military.  He served as a U.S. Army Aviator and in the Military Intelligence Office, was a combat developer at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center, and was a Military Intelligence Aerial Exploitation Company commander.  He has substantial professional education and training in policy analysis for systems engineers and management, completed the contracting officer’s representative course and MASINT collection course, attended air ground operations school, and has training in combating terrorism on installations.  He also has years of experience in aviation training and has completed several additional courses including the U.S. Army Initial Entry Rotary Wing Aviator course and the U.S. Army Fixed Wing Multi-Engine Qualification course.  He also received FAA certificates for commercial pilot, airplane multi-engine land, rotorcraft, instrument airplane and helicopter, and type rating BE200.  In addition to his military experience, Barlow earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History at the University of Mississippi in 1989.
